Balanced Health and Wellness: Spiritual and Mental Well-being in Midlife

Live with intention

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Surrounding Yourself with Positive and Supportive People

As you navigate through all the transitions and transformations of midlife – whether that involves kids leaving, divorce, the loss of a spouse, caring for aging parents, changes at work, or retirement – one thing is certain:

You need to be firing on all cylinders when it comes to your balanced health and wellness. 🧨

Your spiritual, mental, and physical health is a little like a 3-legged stool – if any leg becomes weak, the stool soon topples. When that happens, the other two become compromised, and pretty soon, you are operating at a huge deficit, or not operating at all!

We’ve looked at physical health over the past few weeks, but our discussion of balanced health and wellness isn’t complete until we look at the importance of our health’s other two ‘legs’: our spiritual and mental health.

Spiritual Health

At its core, spiritual health provides you with a sense of purpose, meaning, and connection to something greater than yourself. Whether through religious practices, mindfulness, or a connection with nature, nurturing your spiritual well-being can offer you solace, guidance, and a deeper understanding of life's complexities…. Which can definitely come in handy during the massive transitions of midlife!

How do you go about cultivating your spiritual health?

  • If you’re someone who has practiced organized religion but find yourself missing the energy you get from group prayer and rituals, find a church that you can join. If you already belong to a church and find that you’re craving more, make sure to attend regularly and look for ways to deepen your connection, perhaps through bible study or group work.

  • If, like me, organized religion isn’t your method of connecting spiritually, consider spending more time in nature. Regular time in the great outdoors fills me with a sense of awe, helps me to be more present, and makes me feel connected to something greater than myself. Volunteering for a cause you care about is also a way to feel like you are working towards a common goal and it can be very nourishing to your soul.

Mental Well-being

Your mental health consists of your emotional, psychological, and cognitive well-being. When this part of you thrives, you experience greater clarity, emotional balance, and resilience – all of which enable you to better navigate this part of your journey. These qualities are especially important for helping ease your way through all the transitions of this chapter of life.

What can you do to cultivate good mental health?

  • If you suffer from anxiety or depression, seek professional help, either through a therapist or a Doctor.

  • Identify ways to promote mindfulness. Whether through meditating, walking in nature, or simply pausing during your day to identify what’s going on around you, mindfulness promotes presence. When you’re focused in the present, you are physically unable to worry about what might happen in the future.

  • Feed your soul. Whether you spend 20 minutes in the morning reflecting and journaling, or you sign up for a pottery class or another creative pursuit, you are promoting a positive sense of well-being. By carving out time just for you, you are making a statement that you matter, and that feels good.

Investing your time and effort in enriching your spiritual and mental health will give you more balance, clarity, and a sense of peace. And who doesn’t want more of that?

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

Take a moment to check in with yourself.

Given what I’ve described about balanced health and wellness, how do you think you’re doing when it comes to your spiritual and mental health?

✅When was the last time you felt a sense of awe in nature while walking through the forest, sitting on the beach, or watching a sunset?

✅If you participate in organized religion, are you going to church regularly? If yes, and you still feel the need for more, have you looked into bible study, classes, or other workshops?

✅What types of activities are you doing for yourself? Are you taking classes? Spending time meditating? Reading books that interest you?

✅Do you connect with friends regularly?

✅Do you have a place you like to volunteer? If not, what causes do you care about?

Every small step you take to enrich each ‘leg’ of your health – the physical, mental, and spiritual – will lead you closer to living the future life you desire. ⏳
