How to Create a Routine: Boost Your Life with a Morning Routine

Live with intention

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Surrounding Yourself with Positive and Supportive People

Last week I encouraged you to spend time considering what you want more of in your life. Now, it’s time to think about what action you’re going to take to get them, including how to create a routine that supports your goals.

As the person responsible for your life – and your light – it’s up to you to do what it take to make sure it is burning bright.💡

One of the things I’ve found essential for doing that in my life is my morning routine.

Now, before you roll your eyes and say ‘Bo-ring!’, consider this:

Routine empowers you to live a life you love.

I stand behind that – because there was a time in my life when I didn’t have a routine. I would roll down to the kitchen in my pajamas whenever I woke up, grab a cup of coffee, and scroll through social media until I realized that I had to leave for the gym and didn’t have time to walk the dogs.

My day always ended up feeling rushed and I rarely found time to do the things I wanted to do – not to mention suffering the guilt associated with my dogs feeling neglected! 🥺

It wasn’t until I went on a retreat and spent some time in reflection that I finally decided I wanted more from my life. I had to get intentional if I wanted to create a life I loved. From there I chose to take steps that aligned with the things I wanted, learning how to create a routine that worked for me.

That was over 6 years ago, and except for when I’m traveling, I’m still committed to that weekday routine.

Here’s how to create a routine:

5:40 am - get up, get dressed in workout gear, wash my face, brush my teeth.

6:00 am - boil water for my latte, grab my AirPods, and sit down to meditate

6:15 am - check my email, and make my latte.

6:30 am - walk the dog.

7:40 am - head to the gym.

On the weekends I sleep in a little later and skip the gym, but come Monday morning, I am right back at it. I make sure I’m in bed by 9 or 9:30 because that’s critical for healthy sleep hygiene.

Are there mornings after sleepless nights when I don’t feel like getting up? More times than I can remember. But that’s when I kick my feet over the side of the bed and get up without thinking about it🏃‍♀️

Why? Because I know what my morning routine gives me is immeasurable.

Taking those simple actions – day after day – provides me with the things I want more of:

  • health of body, mind, and spirit – so I feel good, and am able to travel

  • time – waking up early allows me to spend more time writing, working with clients, visiting with friends or simply sitting in my yard enjoying the birds.

  • a sense of calm and centeredness – which helps me respond well to whatever comes up during the day

  • a sense of self-worth – which is strengthened by my ongoing commitment to taking time every day just for me

Every day I know that by 9:00 am I’ll have done what I need to do to be prepared for whatever comes my way. I don’t ever get to the end of the day and think ‘damn. I didn’t even get to the gym today.’

🔋My routine empowers me to live my life instead of letting my life live me.

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

Think about those things that you want more of in your life.

What steps can you take that will help you achieve them?

If you’re taking those steps already, do you need to make some tweaks? Is your routine still serving you? As your needs and life patterns change, sometimes you need to adjust.

Make a list of actions you can incorporate into your life on a regular basis.

Start with one or two of those things and do them every day (or at least every weekday) for 30 days. Once you’ve solidified those habits, add anything else that you think would further enhance your life.

Remember, this is a practice. If you skip a day, don’t beat yourself up. Just get up the next morning and do it again.

And for those night owls – no need to force yourself to get up early if you know you’ll hate it. Choose whatever timing works for you.

That won’t always be easy! 😤

It takes committing to the life you want to create – committing to yourself.

But you, my beautiful friend, are worth it. ♥ Learning how to create a routine that aligns with your goals is a key step in this journey.
