Your Magenta Monday Magic.
When I was younger, I worried a lot about what other people thought of me. And to me, that meant pointing out my ‘flaws’ before anyone else could. I would declare things like, “Ugh. These jeans make me look so fat.” or “Wow. My hair looks terrible!” This negative self-talk eventually became so pervasive and habitual that I stopped noticing it…. and then I actually started believing the things I was saying.
Looking back, I can see that my younger self really just wanted to be accepted. She wanted to be able to show up – warts and all – and feel a part of the group. And that meant rejecting herself before others had the chance. 🤷♀️
Of course, I didn’t realize all this back then.
Does any of this sound familiar? I know this story isn’t unique to me and it has me thinking about why we try so hard to fit in. It happens not only during our teenage years but also as we get older. I see it so often – women twisting themselves up like pretzels in an effort to be accepted. 🥨
“Love and belonging are irreducible needs for all people. In the absence of love and belonging, there is always suffering.“ Brené Brown
So why do we care so much about what other people think? What we’re all really craving, according to expert researcher Brené Brown, is a sense of belonging. We want it so badly that we contort ourselves trying to fit in, like I did when I was younger. Often, we make ourselves into something we’re not, just to feel like we’re part of something …. so we feel connected.
In the process though, we end up betraying ourselves – which, ironically, is not true belonging – or connection - at all.
So how do you find true belonging without betraying your true, authentic self?
The key is to discover who you are at your very core beneath all the self-deprecating talk, and the layers of labels and roles you’ve taken on over the past few decades.
In other words, you need to discover YOU so that you can live YOUR truth.
This month we’ll take a look at some of the things that not only get in the way of discovering our truth, but also stop us from sharing ourselves and our gifts with the world.
I am grateful to be able to say that today, after more than two decades dedicated to my own personal development work, I am proudly and unapologetically still a work in progress AND I am closer to living my truth than I’ve ever been.
I am me. I love myself. I accept myself as I am – warts and all.
My work is focused on empowering as many women as possible to feel exactly the same way. It’s not an easy journey but with the right mindset, I know you can also do it like I do.
