Unlocking Personality Growth: The Power of Pausing and Responding Mindfully

Updated: Nov 11

Live with intention

Your Magenta Monday Magic.

Surrounding Yourself with Positive and Supportive People

When I’m in a good mood I barely register the kinds of things that bother me on a tough day. It’s easy to let things roll off my back when I’m rested, and calm, and things are going my way.

But what happens when you’re off your game, and you run into situations that do trigger you? You know the ones – when your husband says something in that tone that gets under your skin and has you rolling your eyes behind his back?

Or when your mom does that passive-aggressive thing, and you lose your patience and snap at her?

Or when somebody cuts you off in morning traffic and you let loose a stream of curse words that would make a trucker proud? 👿

The Role of Personality Growth in Mindful Responses and Handling Triggers.

If you’re anything like me, those situations feel like a one-way ticket back to the personality growth starting line. Do not pass GO, do not collect $200.

All the work you’ve been doing to intentionally shift the way you show up in your life, to live BRIGHTer? It all seems to come to a crashing halt.

The first thing I’ll say – take a breath and don’t beat yourself up. Recognize that your programming runs deep and those reactions are automatic.

Does that mean you can’t do anything about them? You absolutely can – that’s where the work comes in, and it’s a good time to remember this beautiful quote by Viktor Frankl:

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

There is so much power in the pause. The next time you’re faced with a situation that would typically send you into a rant, try pausing, getting curious, and then responding.

Here’s an example: Your mom sends you an email giving you the guilts.

  1. Pause. Don’t speak. Don’t roll your eyes. Breathe.

  2. Get curious. ‘Hmmm. I noticed I really wanted to tell her off.’

  3. Respond. ‘You know mom, that really doesn’t work for me. How about another time instead?’

Remember, as with all of this work, it is not easy. It takes patience, practice, and self-compassion. That’s where the personality growth is though. And on the other side is freedom. 🥰
