Unveiling Your Authentic Self: Searching for the Truth

Surrounding Yourself with Positive and Supportive People

To all of the Moms out there, I hope you had a beautiful, joy-filled Mother’s Day! 💐

If you’re following along with me, you’ll know that last week we touched on why living your truth is so important, why it’s actually the culmination of all of the Live BRIGHTer pillars.

But before living the truth you will have to get on a journey of searching for the truth.

This week I want to dive into one of the questions that inevitably comes up when I work on this with my clients. Maybe you’ve found yourself asking the same question too:

How do I know what my truth is or How do I get on a journey of searching for the truth? 🤷‍♀️

I wish it was a simple answer – and honestly, it should be. But alas, it isn’t.

While we start out in life as our most authentic selves, as we get older, we collect stories about who we are and how we should be based on the feedback we get from the world around us. Those stories help form our personas - the way we show up to the rest of the world.

The feedback could be messages that you hear from others, or things you decide about yourself based on empirical ‘evidence.’ Things like you’re a good athlete, or you’re a bad girl, or you’re too fat or too skinny. You’re bad at math or not good at games. You’re a wild woman or you’re not a risk taker.

You’ve also likely collected information about who you should be. If you want to be a ‘good’ mom you’ll spend every waking hour taking care of your family and that taking time for yourself is ‘selfish’. Or, it might mean you’re a ‘successful’ entrepreneur if you make a ton of money and grind yourself to the bone. Or you might be somewhere in between the two like I was where you can have it all - be the perfect mom and occupy the corner office.

Add to those stories and personas all of the roles you’ve taken on in your life and well, it’s easy to see how you get further and further away from your truth as time goes by. Before you know it, you identify so closely with those roles and those stories that you have no idea who you are outside of them.

You become pigeonholed, to the point where thinking of doing anything else feels downright too scary to even risk. So you just stay put – where it’s safe.

After all, you willingly took on these roles. And you may find a certain joy and fulfillment in giving to others. For a while, you can keep it up – taking care of everyone else.

And your focus on everyone else, on doing ALL also distracts you from the fact that somewhere along the way, you’ve gotten lost.

You’ve lost who you are.

You’ve lost what your truth is and that's when searching for the truth starts.

Once you arrive in midlife, and your time begins to open up, you may start to notice that the things that once lit you up are less important. They may even seem unnecessary to you now.

This becomes the perfect opportunity for you to get curious about who you really are, and about whether or not your persona still fits.

In that curiosity lies the answers you are seeking. That’s where you find your truth. 🔎

Monday Mindshift

It’s the 1° shift that makes the biggest difference over time.

One of the best ways to facilitate that curiosity is to set aside time each day to quietly reflect on what you are passionate about. 🤔

  • What are you noticing?

  • What are you drawn to?

  • Do you have a friend who is doing something that makes you think – ‘Wow, that would be so cool!’

  • Are you interested in learning about other cultures or different parts of the world?

  • Is there something you’ve always thought about doing that’s kept bubbling up over the years, like learning to paint, or taking ceramics, or starting your own business, or getting your Pilates certification?

Start with questions and then listen for answers. Write down whatever comes up without editing. Keep going until a picture starts to form. This is an important step when you start searching for the truth.

And don’t give up. The inquiry is half the fun! That’s where you learn so much about yourself – about who you really are and what you really want your life to be like.

How do you know what your truth is?

You dig deep, you get curious, you listen, and you keep going until you feel it in your bones.

You’ll know when you’re on the right track. Trust me. 💕
